Creating a Modern Couture wardrobe begins long before you pick up a needle. It begins with the fabric.
Materials make a big difference. Choosing the right fabric can be the difference between an unwearable sewing project and an investment piece you will wear constantly.
The cut of a designer garment can be copied. The feel of a beautiful fabric is something you cannot fake. If you're investing time in learning Modern Couture techniques and constructing your garments with care, choosing quality materials is essential for beautiful results that last.
Once you understand the Language of Materials (Fiber Composition, Fabric Structure, Weight and Drape, Color and Pattern), shopping for fabrics online becomes intuitive.
The challenge, of course, is finding them. This guide is my curated edit: the online fabric shops worth knowing, organized by region, with notes on what makes each one worth your time.
A note on swatches: Most of these shops offer fabric samples. I always order them when available and keep them organized in a reference folder for future projects.
France
France is, of course, where Couture begins; and where I discovered what beautiful fabrics feel like. There are plenty of hidden gems in Paris and beyond, but here are my favorite online boutiques.
My Little Coupon
They specialise in "coupons" of deadstock fabrics from French and Italian fashion houses. This means they sell their fabrics by pre-cut lengths, usually around 3 meters. The selection leans toward quality natural fibres like wools, silks, linens and cottons, at accessible prices. Note: The site isn't fully translated into English, so navigation requires patience if you don't speck French, but the quality and prices make it worth the effort.
Lafayette Saltiel
A true Paris institution since 1925. Their motto speaks to their approach: "quality shouldn't be a luxury". Their website specializes in tailoring and couture notions, with a growing selection of classic fabrics. Their website is very easy to navigate, even if you don't speak French, as it's fully translated into English.
European Union
Beyond France, the EU offers some remarkable fabric sources. Here are some of my favorite.
Stragier — Belgium
A Belgian family business founded in 1935, Stragier offers a wide range of fabric types with an emphasis on sustainability. Most fabrics are manufactured locally in France, Belgium, and neighboring countries, with OEKO-TEX certification. The English version of their website is currently limited, which may pose a challenge for non-French speakers. Worth navigating regardless—this is one of my most-used sources.
Naturstoff by Anita Pavani — Germany
A German institution operating since 1978, Naturstoff specializes in natural fibers. Their collection spans over 1,000 fabrics made exclusively from natural materials (silk, wool, linen, cotton, hemp), many of which are GOTS-certified organic. Their designer fabric section carries Italian surplus fabrics from major fashion houses, often at a fraction of their original value. Free samples are available to order, and the shop ships internationally.
United Kingdom
The UK has a rich history of bespoke tailoring. Here are my favorite suppliers for traditional materials.
Linton Tweeds
Linton Tweeds has been weaving couture bouclé fabrics and fancy woven tweeds for over 100 years, and their cloths have dressed some of the most recognisable silhouettes in fashion history. Their online shop offers worldwide delivery and direct access to the same fabrics that supply the haute couture trade.
MacCulloch & Wallis — London
An institution since 1902, MacCulloch & Wallis has supplied the fashion and theatre trades of London for well over a century. They have a great range of notions and supplies, in addition to a beautiful selection of fabrics (including deadstock). Online ordering with worldwide delivery.
United States
For those in North America, Mood is my go-to shop when I'm in New York or Miami.
Mood Fabrics
Mood is the reference shop for American designers and serious home sewers alike. Their fabric collection is carefully curated, all available by the yard with detailed specifications. The range is enormous, the site is easy to navigate, and they ship internationally.
Asia
Tissura — Hong Kong
Tissura is a European premium fabric boutique with its physical home in the heart of Hong Kong and an online shop that ships worldwide. They stock fabrics from leading European textile manufacturers. The website provides detailed descriptions of every fabric, including country of origin and manufacturer.
A Final Word on Fabric Investment
At École Novo, I teach Wearable Couture: creating a Curated Wardrobe designed for your body, made up of pieces you'll wear constantly. The goal is creating luxury that lasts, garments that transcend trends and disposable fashion. Fabric choice is the foundation of that intention. I invest in quality materials for foundational pieces, elevate accessible classic fabrics through thoughtful design, and splurge selectively for special projects.
